What Is Bacterial Bioculture and How Does It Work in an STP?

Every sewage treatment plant is essentially a controlled microbial farm. Bacteria in the aeration tank consume the organic pollutants in sewage — the same way any living organism consumes food — and convert them into harmless gases, water and new bacterial cells. When this microbial community is healthy, your outlet water is clean and odour-free. When it is damaged by toxic shocks, long power cuts or poor maintenance, performance collapses.

A bacterial bioculture is a concentrated preparation of beneficial bacteria, grown in controlled conditions and added to your plant to rebuild or reinforce that microbial community. Think of it as transplanting a healthy soil ecosystem into a tired garden.

What happens after dosing?

Within hours of dosing, the introduced bacteria begin attaching to flocs and surfaces in your aeration tank. Over the first 1–2 weeks they multiply and establish dominance, out-competing the foul-smelling anaerobic organisms that caused the problem. Organic acids, proteins, fats and starches are broken down faster, so BOD and COD begin to fall.

Specialised strains matter too. Nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia — the compound behind fishy odours and fish-kills in receiving waters — into nitrate. Sludge-degrading strains reduce the volume of excess sludge you must handle, directly cutting disposal costs.
