
Industrial ETPs rarely fail overnight — they drift. The biology degrades quietly for weeks while reports still look 'manageable', until one day the outlet code turns red. Catching these five early signs lets you intervene with biological dosing instead of expensive emergency chemicals.
The five warning signs
1. Steadily rising outlet COD/BOD despite unchanged production. 2. Persistent foam or scum on the aeration tank. 3. Sludge that settles slowly or floats (bulking). 4. Septic, sour odours around tanks and drains. 5. Monthly chemical bills that keep climbing to hold the line.
Each of these points to a microbial community that has lost diversity or density — usually after a toxic shock, a pH excursion or hydraulic overload. A structured bioculture dosing program rebuilds that community in 3–6 weeks, after which chemical dependency typically falls on its own.
Act early, spend less
The cost of preventive biological dosing is a small fraction of emergency aeration upgrades, extra coagulants or non-compliance penalties.
